Academic Journey

Prof. Towqueer Alam Falahi began his early education in his hometown and later joined Jamiatul Falah, a renowned Islamic institution in Bilariaganj, Azamgarh (U.P.), where he obtained the degrees of al-Aalmiyah and al-Fadhilah.

In 1985, he joined Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) to further his academic journey. He completed his M.A. and M.Phil. in Arabic Literature from the Department of Arabic, AMU. Subsequently, he pursued and earned his Doctorate from the same department, focusing his research on "The Holy Qur'an and the Orientalists."

Academic Career at AMU

After receiving his Doctorate, Prof. Alam was appointed as a Research Associate in the Department of Arabic. On May 11, 1993, he joined the Faculty of Theology as a Lecturer in Sunni Theology at AMU, Aligarh. He was promoted to Reader (on a cadre post) on January 29, 2004, and later elevated to the position of Professor in Sunni Theology on January 29, 2010.

Leadership Roles: Besides his position as Professor, Prof. Alam is also serving as editor of Tahzeeb-ul-Akhlaq and Nishant, a prestigious monthly academic journal of international repute established by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, editor of Fikr-o-Nazar, a prestigious academic journal of international repute. He has held positions including Chairman of the Department of Sunni Theology, Chairman of the Department of Shia Theology, Nazim-e-Deeniyat (Director of Religious Affairs) of both Sunni and Shia, Member of the Academic Council, Member of the Executive Council, and Member of the University Court. He served two terms as Dean of the Faculty of Theology (2017–2019 and 2023–2025), and during his tenure as Seniormost Dean, carried out the responsibilities of Vice-Chancellor (officiating) of AMU several times.

Till date Prof. Alam has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to Islamic scholarship. Some of them include:

  • Teaching Excellence Award (Atlanta, Georgia, USA, April 2016)
  • Visiting Professor Award (Mercer University, Atlanta, USA, April 2016)
  • Best Writer Award among all Fuzala-e-Jamiatul Falah (Azamgarh, India, November 2012)
  • Essay Writing Competition Award, seven times during studentship (Aligarh Muslim University)
  • Debate Competition Award, fifteen times during studentship (Aligarh Muslim University)

He has presented research papers and delivered invited lectures in over 230 national and international seminars and conferences, establishing himself as a prominent voice in Islamic scholarship worldwide.

Prof. Towqueer Alam Falahi has supervised 23 doctoral theses till date, and examined more than 35 international theses as a foreign examiner. During the tenure of Prof. Alam's Deanship & Chairmanship, more than twenty doctoral theses have been submitted including the thesis of Prof. M. Habeebullah, who is currently serving as a Dean (2025-2027) and has served as a Chairman of the Department of Sunni Theology, Dr. Asghar Aijaz, who is currently serving as a Chairman of the Department of Shia Theology (2025-2028), Dr. Hadi Raza, Dr. Raza Abbas and others.
